Local BBC radio stations nationwide are set to partner with Platinum Jubilee street parties as part of an extensive schedule of cross-network programmes announced by the broadcaster.
The BBC has revealed weeks of special programming across television, radio, BBC News, iPlayer and Sounds, with content planned from around Britain. It will culminate on the Jubilee weekend with multiple live broadcasts planned.
It will also see the return of former Desert Island Discs presenter Kirsty Young, who will front programmes from Thursday to Sunday (June 2nd – 5th).
Charlotte Moore, BBC Chief Content Officer, said: “The BBC is marking The Queen’s momentous Platinum Jubilee in spectacular style with an unprecedented range of special programming.”
Programmes and activations planned for the weeks leading up to the Jubilee and the weekend itself include The Queens Jubilee Pudding: 70 Years in the Baking on BBC One; The Repair Shop Jubilee Special; The Verb – Live from The Queen’s private library featuring Poet Laureate Simon Armitage on Radio 3; and a Blue Peter Jubilee special on June 3rd.
Morning Live, which broadcasts from Manchester city centre, will announce and surprise the winners of the Platinum Champions Awards run by the Royal Voluntary Service.
And on the Friday preceding the Jubilee on June 5th, presenter Clive Myrie will take a look at the Crown Jewels having been given exclusive access, travelling around Britain to explore the artefacts’ stories all the way back to 1066.
Around the UK, local radio stations are teaming up with 70 street parties to mark as many years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, with reporters capturing all the goings-on of the weekend – while local news bulletins will showcase celerations across England.
Moore added: “In celebration of Her Majesty’s seventy years of service the BBC will bring the people of the UK together with something for everyone to commemorate this historic anniversary culminating on the extended bank holiday weekend.”
