BBC Three to lift lid on tissue donation with Liverpool-based series

The hidden world of tissue donation will be revealed in a new BBC Three series focusing on the Tissue Bank in Liverpool.

The 2x60min series, which will be called Human Tissue Team and made by True Stories, will follow the work of the donor retrieval team and staff at the Tissue Bank, which is housed within the University of Liverpool.

It currently supplies 350 NHS hospitals around the country.

The series will also meet donor families and follow the stories of tissue recipients as they undergo life-transforming procedures.

The series’ commissioning editor is Tom McDonald, producer/director is Michael Ogden and the executive producers are Dominique Walker and Julie Davies.

It’s one of five new factual and current affairs series announced today by Zai Bennett, controller of BBC Three.

The others include three-parter The Real South Africa with Reggie Yates, during which the presenter will live and work within three different communities in contemporary Africa.

Bennett said: “BBC Three is the only channel dedicated to making meaningful, relevant, punchy factual programmes for young people in Britain today and these new commissions encapsulate what we’re all about. Our factual and current affairs output wins plaudits and awards and I couldn’t be more excited about these new shows.”
