Zetland FM has been awarded a community radio licence to serve Redcar and East Cleveland in North Yorkshire.

The 5 year licence has been provided on a “not-for-profit” basis, which means that the station must concentrate on social benefits to the local community.

“This licence award is the culmination of a huge amount of hard work from the entire Zetland FM team, and would not have been possible without the incredible support we have received from local people, organisations and businesses,” stated chairman Jeremy Gartland.

“We have lots of very exciting plans for Zetland FM, and look forward to bringing a brand new truly local community radio service to listeners in Redcar and Cleveland.”

Ofcom received 13 applications for community radio stations in Northeast England, Cumbria and North Yorkshire.

The regulator considered 2 further applications but decided not to award licences to Palace FM, Redcar or Radio Scarborough.
