The Yorkshire Grand Depart secures £10m funding

The Yorkshire Grand Depart of the 2014 Tour De France has been provided with up to £10m of Government funding to help stage the event.

Welcome to Yorkshire told Prolific North earlier this week that they were hoping to have the sum confirmed to help them ramp up their promotional activity in the build up to the race.

It’s already received £1m from Arts Council England which will be used for an Arts and Culture Festival and this latest injection of cash will help maximise the Tour’s economic benefits.

“The Tour de France is the biggest event in cycling and for this country to host the Grand Depart is a real honour.  We want to help deliver a world class event that boosts all local economies where the race will pass through and encourages more people to get involved in cycling. I look forward to working together with all the key stakeholders in achieving this,” said Sports Minister Hugh Robertson.

A new organising committee will be established to deliver the English stages.
