York’s One&Other reinvents ‘tired local news format’ and looks to TV


one&otherYork independent publisher, One&Other is sporting a new look website in a move which seeks to distinguish it in the local media arena and this morning heard it was the winning bid for the local TV license in the York area.

Managing director Stuart Goulden said the current offering was ‘version 0.1’ and that that there were plenty of new features to come as they would be keeping the site ‘always in beta’ to allow for regular enhancements and changes.

“We’ve sought to reinvent the tired article format of local newspaper websites – which typically consists of a headline and a big box of text – to be more in keeping with the creativity of our printed magazine.

“As a responsive site we’re now attracting 60% of our visits from mobile where we hope it is an equally joyous reading experience. We’re trying to do the little things really well, like breaking the content down into bite-sized chunks, leading with breaking photography and regular updates, accommodating bespoke formats such as lists and interviews, and, where relevant, encouraging our readers to act in some way. For us, commenting isn’t the highest outcome of an article and many of these conversations are better served on social media.”

The social enterprise, which also publishes a bi-monthly glossy magazine distributed in the city, was recently revealed as part of the winning consortium which was the sole bidder for the Local TV license in the York area.

And Ofcom announced this morning that the consortium has won – a daily mix of local news, current affairs, entertainment and culture programming broadcast to homes on channel 8 on Freeview coming up.
