Coronation Street actress Jean Alexander has admitted she no longer watched the programmes due to its bed-hopping storylines.
Her criticisms come after both Coronation Street and Emmerdale were among the ten most complained about television shows of last year.
The northern soaps held the dubious honour of being at number 10 and number seven respectively in a list of programmes which viewers found offensive published by the regulator Ofcom.
In an interview with The Mirror today, the 88-year-old, famous for her in-character curlers and soft heart as Hilda Ogden, also rules out any future return to the cobbles of the Itv soap.
She said: “Things have to move on, I know, but in the days of Hilda Ogden, Annie Walker and co, the Street was gentle, funny and human. The humour has all but gone out of it.”
