The latest Nash Squared film, produced by Stockport based production agency SOUND&COLOUR, has been screened in the Houses of Parliament to industry leaders and political delegates. The film was introduced by Liberal Democrat and Spokesperson for Science, Innovation and Technology; Victoria Collins MP.
AI has seen huge growth in recent years, but with this growth comes an increase in data consumption and a lack of public understanding over the hidden energy costs and environmental impact associated with it. With industry regulation unable to keep up with the pace of AI development, it raises the question as to what the real impact of this exponential growth is?
The 30-minute film is the 5th episode in the TechFlix series, which delves into the biggest topics affecting the global tech industry. Shot on location in Las Vegas at the world’s largest consumer electronics event CES, as well as Twickenham and Windsor, the film uncovers AI processing and single use data as major impacts on environmental change.
Featuring in the film, NetApp’s Technology Evangelist said “68% of the data that we store is a landfill of garbage that we do absolutely nothing with after it’s been created. The amount of emissions created by this single-use-data is typically more than is being created by the entire airline industry.”

Nash Squared’s David Savage, the film’s writer and presenter, said of the long term collaboration with production partner SOUND&COLOUR: “Nash Squared’s ambition with our films is to inform, educate and generate debate around some of the biggest topics and challenges in technology, breathing life into the talent and community we are connected to. That ambition isn’t always easy to translate – but SOUND&COLOUR are the perfect partners to help realise our ideas and pull together our research and insights into engaging, impactful and entertaining content. Their team understand the goals behind what we’re trying to create and add art and passion that helps to translate complex topics into something easy to digest.”
SOUND&COLOUR co-founder and the film’s director Chris Elliott added: “Heading out to Las Vegas to shoot at one of the biggest tech conferences posed lots of production challenges, around location scouting, permits and logistics. We spent 2 months in pre-production getting everything set up for the 3-day shoot. I’m so proud of the team, the effort they’ve put in and what we’ve achieved with this film for our client. It’s such an important topic, we’re at the cusp of a technological revolution that will change the way we work forever, but there is a hidden cost many are completely unaware of.”
