Scottish daily bucks cuts trend with creation of new Edinburgh correspondent role

Scottish daily The Herald is flying in the face of cutbacks across print news media with the creation of a new Edinburgh correspondent role.

Donald Turvill, previously an Edinburgh-based local democracy reporter for Reach plc, has been appointed, and announced it on social media saying “The Herald is taking on the capital.”

Turvill went on: “I live here in the city, I’ve covered it as a journalist for the last three years and I am always interested in what’s happening and the issues that people care about.

“So far I have looked at the city’s poor phone signal, the homeless situation and the council’s use of unlawful accommodation and all the other drama from the City Chambers.

“We have big plans for 2025 but we also want to hear from you and what we should be looking into

“So please do drop us a message and let me know what we should be focusing on in the New Year.”

Speaking to Hold the Front Page, Herald editor Catherine Salmond showed a degree of contrition when she conceded that, although a national paper, The Glasgow-based daily’s Edinburgh coverage has perhaps not always been the best it could be: “It has been a long time since the word ‘Glasgow’ appeared in our masthead; a decision rightly taken to better reflect our wider coverage of Scotland, the UK and beyond,” she said. “Just 50 miles east, the capital is bursting with stories needing to be told and topics desperate of investigation. Have we done this as well as we should? No, and so that is now changing.

“I am delighted to have brought Donald Turvill into our team as Edinburgh Correspondent to bring original, quality exclusives, building on his work as the city’s Local Democracy Reporter over the last few years. He has an infectious energy, professionalism and knowledge that is an asset to us.

“This is an exciting time for The Herald and I am confident, having spent a huge chunk of my own career working in Edinburgh, that we understand what is needed to deliver innovative content to attract new audiences.”
