The Salford Media Festival has just closed its doors after two days of discussion and in-depth consideration of the media scene for the nations and regions of the UK.
At a time when such a lot of activity is focussed in the capital, the annual event here in the north provides some welcome attention as well as reinforcing the importance of the MediaCityUK base.
Discussions today included a keynote speech from Scotland’s cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, Scottish Government Fiona Hyslop, MSP.
She also managed to squeeze a trip around the Coronation Street set into her time down south to deliver what has been dubbed ‘The Weatherfield Declaration’.
Hyslop was questioned closely on that issue of potential programming changes in the event of a yes vote during BBC Radio 4’s Media Show which was broadcast from the festival this afternoon.
“We already have a share of the BBC don’t forget. People want to see themselves reflected back but only 48% of people currently think the BBC reflects their lives.
“I am a great fan of Coronation Street and want to see that in an independent Scotland.”

As the festival delegates leave the city for another year, any of them picking up the Manchester Evening News tonight will be entertained to see that veteran presenter Richard Madeley also tells the paper he’s glad to have been proved wrong about the BBC Breakfast move to Salford being unappealing to big star interviewees.
