Channel 4 has commissioned a new 4-part drama based on the historical archive of Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire
Written by John Fay, The Mill (working title), is set in 1833 and depicts the “brutal early years” of the Industrial Revolution.
The cast is led by Kerrie Hayes, who plays the real life Esther Price, a Liverpudlian who risks her own position to make a stand for working conditions.
A third of the workers at the Mill are teenage apprentices and the adults who run the business include Kevin McNally playing Timperley, the manager of the Apprentice House and Donald Sumpter as the Mill’s founder, Samuel Greg.
This will be Channel 4’s first ever factually inspired period drama. It’s directed by James Hawes and produced by Caroline Levy. It’s being made by Darlow Smithson Productions.
