Peter Barron, the editor of The Northern Echo has been appointed as a director of journalism training council, the NCTJ.

It comes following the retirement of Newsquest Lancashire managing director, Jan Lever.
Barron started his career 34 years ago, having trained on an NCTJ pre-entry course in Darlington. He went on to get a trainee reporters job at the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph in 1980.
He returned to the North East as a senior reporter at The Northern Echo 4 years later and become news editor in 1990 and deputy editor in 1995.
The Hartlepool Mail gave him his first editorship, but he stayed there for just 2 years before heading back to the The Northern Echo as editor in 1999.
“Training has played an important part in my career. It is something I’ve always been passionate about and I am delighted to be able to continue that area of interest by joining the NCTJ board of directors,” he said.
“These are challenging but exciting times to be coming into the profession and I hope I can use my experience to help ensure young journalists are well equipped for a rapidly changing media industry.”
