Having secured funding from the North of Tyne Combined Authority, tech company Boxmodel Digital Media has announced the creation of an app which will allow customers to order, collect and pay for food contact-free.

The Tyneside-based company is creating the Apple and Android-compatible app in order to support the struggling hospitality sector in the pandemic, ensuring safety for both restaurant staff and customers. Eligible businesses in Northumberland will be able to take advantage of the app, which is delivered by the Northumberland COVID Business Response Programme (NCBRP) with funding provided through the Northumberland COVID-19 Capacity Fund Project.

Two platforms are set to be created by Boxmodel – the first is a full eCommerce website for business to sell their goods through; and the second is geared towards helping businesses like pubs and restaurants reopen with collections.

Boxmodel Digital Media is a specialist in software architecture which has provided an end-to-end solution for clients including Renault, Airbus and Rentokil.

Richard Wearmouth, Chair of Advance Northumberland – which delivers the NCBRP – said: “This is a great opportunity for businesses to ensure maximum safety to their staff and customers during the pandemic.

“The Northumberland hospitality industry has really taken a hit this year, this app could really help businesses to continue to work safely.”

Deputy Leader of North Tyneside Council, Councillor Bruce Pickard, added: “This is exactly the kind of forward thinking and innovative activity the COVID Capacity Fund was set up to support.

“We’re seeing every day the pressure this pandemic is putting on people’s lives and livelihoods, with our hospitality industry especially hard hit.

“I’d urge all those running hospitality businesses to apply for this app. It will protect your customers, protect your staff, and make lockdown trading that bit easier.”
