Spoof shirt costs Huddersfield £50k

The Football Association has fined Huddersfield Town for wearing a Paddy Power-sponsored kit.

The team wore the shirts, which featured a prominent sash advertising the bookmaker during a pre-season friendly at Rochdale.

The FA said that the decision to “enlarge the advertisement in such an overt manner was irresponsible, particularly in the current climate regarding gambling.”

The club admitted the charge, that the kit breached advertising regulations. The FA committee also warned them about their future conduct.

It later transpired that the kit design was a stunt, to promote Paddy Power’s “Save Our Shirts” campaign.

In a statement Paddy Power said:

“On August 1st, the FA fined Millwall £10,000 for their supporters’ racist chanting.

Today, the FA fined Huddersfield Town £50,000 for wearing a fake shirt in a pre-season friendly. You couldn’t make this shirt up.”

The one-off shirts were later auctioned for charity – raising more than £30k.
