The Landing at MediaCityUK and Cisco are teaming up for a series of workshops on “IPv6 – Basis for the Internet of Everything.”
It comes as the last batch of IPv4 addresses were distributed last year and Cisco believes that the UK still lags behind other European countries when it comes to awareness of IPv6 and the conversion from IPv4.
Internet Protocol version 6 is the latest version of the Internet Protocol (IP), which is what can identify and locate computers on networks and it also routes traffic across the Internet. IPv6 accounts for just a tiny fraction of internet traffic, with IPv4 carrying more than 90% of it.
Participants from Vodafone, Virgin Media, BT, KCOM and a number of academics will attend the event later this week.
“The development of Media City and the creation of The Landing have been a wonderful process to watch over the last few years. We have been looking for an opportunity to co-operate in Salford,” said Gareth Macnaughton, director strategy and innovation, Cisco UK and Ireland.
“We feel that the IPv6 demo lab and training is a perfect opportunity to launch our co-operation in the Northwest. We are also looking at opportunities to further promote UK-wide innovation by donating Telepresence and video-conference equipment to The Landing.”
