GB News announces US expansion

GB News, which bases its commercial operations in Manchester, has announced that it will open a new bureau in Washington DC and launch its services in the United States, which some might argue is the best place for the channel given the current unhinged state of US politics.

From a studio near the White House, the channel will broadcast a brand new live nightly show hosted by broadcaster Bev Turner.

The new GB News programme will launch in September and “bring British audiences closer than ever to the political news which unfolds each day in America.”

The new two-hour show will add 14 hours of fresh live coverage to GB News every week, and “underscores the channel’s growing commitment to live news” at a time when many rivals are planning on scaling back their coverage to mass reach audiences.

GB News also plans to announce the appointment of a dedicated US political editor, who will join the network’s Capitol Hill operation as part of its expanding American team.

Last year, the network appointed Steven Edginton, formerly of The Telegraph, as its US correspondent. His first documentary for GB News was, predictably, headlined America’s Muslim City.

The expansion will also see GB News extend its distribution across the US, with content being made available free to all Americans.

GB News has already amassed a huge audience in the United States via its YouTube channel, which has had more than a quarter-of-a-billion views in America, and the expansion comes as the BBC announced plans to introduce a paywall for those accessing parts of its website from the United States.

US-based visitors to BBC.com will now have to pay an annual or monthly fee for access to most BBC News stories and features, and to stream the BBC News channel.

Turner said: “With the gutsiest guests and the most iconic backdrops, I intend to keep viewers up late.

“Fronting the next stage of GB News’s evolution is both a huge honour and an immense responsibility, and I cannot wait to represent the People’s Channel on a global stage.

“After three years at GB News, I hope the viewers trust me to show them what life is really like in the epicentre of ‘MAGA-land’ as history unfolds before our eyes.

“We will be disrupting the late-night TV space as the next day’s papers land in the UK and America’s prime-time analysis gears up. This affords us the chance to deliver a unique UK-USA hybrid of political, cultural and social issues from the start-line of global politics.

“We will fulfil the need for a British voice with an international perspective to help our viewers get a sense of who’s really on their side.

“Tapping into Washington’s heartbeat and delivering real-time perspective with editorial edge, the show will be alive, and a conversation that’s punchy, intelligent and unmissable. What happens in DC, reverberates in GB and we will capture every moment.

Michael Booker, editorial director of GB News, hailed the move as a “new chapter” for the channel.

He said: “This is a huge moment for GB News as we grow our presence and deliver more of the fearless journalism that defines us. The world’s biggest political story is playing out in Washington, and its impact is being felt daily in towns and cities across Britain. More than ever before, what happens in the USA is having huge consequences, both socially and economically, for the people of Britain.

“We’ve seen time and again this year that a decision made on one day in Washington DC is felt the next day in Washington, Tyne and Wear. It’s essential The People’s Channel is right there, reporting live, asking the tough questions, and telling it like it is.

“While others scale back on live free coverage, GB News is investing in our content. Our new Washington investment, our expanded programming, and our brilliant on-the-ground team will ensure we’re not just reporting on the story but that we’re right at the heart of it.”

The expansion comes amid surging popularity for GB News ain “MAGA-land”. In January, Similarweb’s Digital 100 rankings named GBNews.com the fastest-growing news website in America, with 420 per cent growth in its US audience over the past year.

GBNews.com now attracts nearly 2.6m monthly US users, up from just over half a million in 2023, an astonishing rise that has outpaced digital giants including Fox News and The New York Times. Since launching in 2022, the site has welcomed over 55m US visitors.

The Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2025, meanwhile, recently concluded that, based on weekly reach, GB News has become the UK’s fourth biggest news media.

Based on TV, radio, and print data, Reuters ranked GB News above Channel Four News, Channel Five News and CNN, while online, GBNews.com is ranked the sixth largest news platform in the UK, tied with Telegraph.co.uk and above Sun Online, The Times Online, ITV News Online, Mirror Online, Yahoo News, and CNN Online.
