He was made redundant by the MEN in February last year as part of a Trinity Mirror restructure.

In the interim he’s been freelancing for national and local business titles such as Property Week, Estates Gazette, Big Issue in the North and Place North West, as well as some copywriting and PR. He’ll be joining Judge & Howard as a senior consultant.

Co-founder Libby Howard said: “Despite the tough economic climate, our business continues to thrive, thanks to our ethos of five-star service delivered by a senior team.

“Simon is a perfect fit for our high-level client portfolio – which includes four PLCs – and his wide-ranging journalism experience will be a major asset in the era of content-driven communication.”

Donohue, who will be working with clients including healthcare company EMIS Group, added: “I had a good time in journalism with some incredible experiences and learnt a lot. I also realised that I’d picked up a lot of great skills along the way and it was time to put them to good use in a slightly different, although still similar, arena.

“Judge & Howard is a great agency with a fantastically talented team and it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to very much.”
