Don’t panic! It’s Dad’s Army the movie in Yorkshire


p01lz1hwThe movie version of much-loved British comedy Dad’s Army is about to start filming in Yorkshire – with a stellar cast of well-known names including Bill Nighy and Catherine Zeta Jones.

The film, written by Hamish McColl and produced by Damian Jones, was packaged by Wiggin EP and is backed by Screen Yorkshire through the Yorkshire Content Fund. Shooting commences in October entirely on location in Yorkshire, it was announced today.

Screen Yorkshire chief executive, Sally Joynson said ‘news didn’t get much better than this’.

“A truly iconic series, a fabulous cast with some the cream of Britain’s acting talent – and all set in the stunning landscapes of Yorkshire. This is great news for Yorkshire and for Screen Yorkshire – the culmination of months of work and our investment has played a critical part. It’s a fitting finale to an already fabulous year for the region.”

The casting reads like a who’s who of British talent with Toby Jones as Captain Mainwaring (The Hunger Games, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Tom Courtenay as Corporal Jones (Quartet), Michael Gambon as Godfrey (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The King’s Speech), Blake Harrison as Pike (The Inbetweeners) joining Nighy and Zeta Jones.
There’s also Danny Mays as Walker (Atonement), Bill Paterson as Fraser (Miss Potter), Sarah Lancashire (Last Tango in Halifax, Lark Rise to Candleford) , Alison Steadman (Gavin and Stacey) , Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Doctor Who) and Annette Crosbie (What We Did on Our Holiday).

As the county prepares to re-invent itself as Walmington-on-Sea Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said:”Yorkshire has been the backdrop to many iconic films and we’re delighted, thanks to Screen Yorkshire, that what looks set to be a huge hit will be filmed here. We look forward to welcoming Dad’s Army and the stellar cast to the region – we’ll make sure they are given a warm Yorkshire welcome.”
