Channel 4 calls for high impact climate change shows

Channel 4 has issued a “Climate Emergency Brief” for indies to produce “high-impact” shows to inspire audiences to engage with climate change.

In the commissioning document, it stated:

“Our climate content should be hopeful, irreverent, provocative, and never dull.  Showcasing big ideas and storytelling with imagination, distinction, and drive, shocking and surprising our audiences and starting conversations you can’t escape.”

It added that it didn’t want “small shows specifically about the climate” or programmes which “tell” people what to do.

“Climate change is, quite literally, the burning issue of our age but sadly often makes for rather eat-your-peas television,” said Ian Katz, Channel 4 Chief Content Officer.

“We’re looking for ideas that are inventive or audacious enough to make our viewers sit up and think about what they can do to help solve the problem – and ideally empower them to actually do something about it.”

The cross-genre brief means the broadcaster is open to everything from documentaries, dramas and comedies to stunts and viral social content.
