Queer as Folk to be remade for America
Russell T Davies’ Queer as Folk is being “rebooted” for an American audience.
It had been in development at Bravo, but is now moving to NBCUniversal’s as-yet-unnamed streaming service - which is due to launch next year.
Queer as Folk was Davies’ landmark series for Channel 4. Set around Manchester’s Canal Street, it portrayed the late 1990s gay culture. It was produced by Nicola Shindler’s Red Production Company.
Davies and Shindler are both said to be involved in the American remake, with Shindler producing and Davies taking up an executive producer role.
It will be written by Stephen Dunn, who wrote and directed Closet Monster, and is reported to be a “modern take” on the original series, with new characters.
The format is distributed by Digital Rights Group.
NBCU is the latest major player to enter the streaming market. Its service is set to be funded through advertising and will include feature films, television series and original programming.
