Liverpool FC star Diogo Jota, 28, has died after a traffic accident in Spain, the Guardia Civil has confirmed.
The Liverpool forward’s brother Andre Felipe has also passed away following the incident in Zamora on Thursday morning at around 00:30 local time (23.30 BST). The Lamborghini they were travelling in left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking another car.
It comes just two weeks after the Portuguese international married his long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso in Porto surrounded by their three children. Jota shared a video of the special day on social media. The video gave an insight into the pre-ceremony preparations while the Portuguese couple were seen dancing along to a live band. Jota captioned the post: “A day we will never forget 🤍”
Jota began his professional football career with Paços de Ferreira before signing for Atlético Madrid in 2016. He later had loan spells at FC Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers, helping the latter gain promotion to the Premier League before making a permanent move in 2018.
He scored 44 goals in 131 appearances for Wolves before joining Liverpool in 2020 in a £41 million deal. Internationally, Jota earned senior caps for Portugal from 2019 onwards, featuring in two European Championships and the 2022 World Cup, and was part of the squads that won the UEFA Nations League in both 2019 and 2025.
In a statement Liverpool FC said they were ‘devastated’ by the tragedy. “The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre,” the statement said. “Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
