BBC Sport has announced a restructure of its senior leadership team, with Ben Gallop taking on an expanded role as head of radio sport & sports news.

Gallop, currently head of interactive and F1, will have responsibility for sports event coverage on radio and digital platforms, the development of digital services, participation and the implementation of the corporation’s youth audience strategy.

Richard Burgess, the current head of radio sport & sports news, is moving to a new role within BBC News.

Burgess’s other responsibilities will be incorporated into the newly created role of head of sports journalism, working closely with Gallop.

BBC Sport director Barbara Slater, who announced the changes in an email to staff, said a recruitment process to fill the role would begin shortly.

She said: “The Head of Sports Journalism will lead our domestic & global sports news operations across all platforms, oversee the newsgathering operation and be the primary liaison with the network of journalists across the Nations & English Regions.”

Slater added that she hoped to make an appointment by mid-February.
