The North’s hotspot for national and international business revealed

Prolific North’s Global Reach initiative returns this year with new insight into the national and international activity of tech, marketing services, media and creative companies with a Northern base.

Global Reach profiles companies with an office or headquarters in the North and elsewhere nationally and internationally, to build a picture of the North’s contribution to global business.

Prolific North worked with Manchester Metropolitan’s School of Digital Arts (SODA), which led the research.

The soon-to-be-published research follows Prolific North’s 2013 Global Reach pilot, which identified around 250 companies of this kind, employing over 18,000 staff.

Now, following seven years of growth in the region, Prolific North will publish an extended and in-depth report of more than 500 companies in 2021.

A webinar featuring the report's preliminary findings will be held on May 20th 2021

New research

Among the findings, the Global Reach 2021 report reveals that Manchester has the most businesses of this kind, followed by Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle.

The headquarters of these companies are most commonly in London, followed by companies in the US, India and Australia. Around 40% of the companies have their headquarters overseas.

The new research also finds strong Northern representation in hosting, healthtech, publishing, and fintech, with cybersecurity and AI emerging as new contenders.

These are just a few of the findings to come from the soon-to-be published report, which will coincide with a launch webinar.
