Appeal to Hull businesses to support apprentice scheme

Employers in Hull are being called on to back a scheme to secure apprenticeships in the creative industries for local youngsters.

The Creative Employment Programme in Hull started in October 2015, with the aim getting 20 young people onto apprenticeships in the creative industries by the end of December.

The first cohort of 20 have successfully started apprenticeships across the city – which is the UK City of Culture for 2017 – in the creative and cultural industries.

Sectors being targeted include advertising and marketing, digital design, stage production, event management, cultural information or community arts.

The scheme is now looking to sign up another 20 apprentices by April 2016 and needs the support of more employers.

The partnership, working with Hull Training and Adult Education, secured a grant of more than £90,000 from the Creative and Cultural Skills’ (CC Skills) Creative Employment Programme.

The grant is being used to offer companies and organisations involved in the creative sector a contribution to the wage of any apprentice they employ.

Councillor Rosie Nicola, Portfolio Holder for Learning, Skills and Safeguarding Children, said: “Apprenticeships are a great way for businesses to take on new talent and help to develop the city’s expanding cultural sector.

“There has never been a better time for businesses to get involved in employing an apprentice within the creative industries, as the city prepares to host the UK City of Culture in 2017.

“This will not only bring fresh young creative ideas to the table for businesses, but also gives young people the chance to secure their future careers prospects by offering on-the-job experience and gaining recognised qualifications.”

Employers interested in taking part can contact Vicky Riseham at Hull Training and Adult Education on 01482 615 245 for more details.
