Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has joined The Telegraph as a new weekly columnist.

Neville’s work on Sky Sports has seen him establish a reputation as one of the most respected pundits in the game.

He follows former team-mate Paul Scholes, who took up a column with the London Evening Standard and Independent group on Friday.

Neville, who gave an exclusive interview to the paper on Saturday, said: “I am delighted to join the Telegraph. I’ve got to think of ways of engaging with the readers like no-one has done before.

“Simple as that, I set myself the highest standard when I do something – what I’ve got to give them is something that they’ve not seen before, I want to do pieces that make people think differently.”

Adam Sills, head of sport at Telegraph Media Group, said: “I am thrilled to be welcoming Gary Neville to the Telegraph. Gary is the best football expert around and he will make the Telegraph’s already unrivalled football offering even better.

“He will be sharing his opinion and insight every week to Telegraph readers in print and on our digital platforms and joins our unbeatable team led by Henry Winter and Paul Hayward.”

Neville can be seen as a replacement for Alan Hansen, who enjoyed a long-standing a lucrative agreement with the Telegraph before filing his final column this summer.
