To mark this month’s eighth birthday, the Salford Star newspaper has announced today that it will be returning to a printed version this autumn.
The paper was forced to go online only in 2009 when its community funding was pulled in a row with the council over claims it was too political.
Last October it celebrated the publication of 2,000 online articles by announcing a fundraiser to get it back into print and today announced its success.
Writing at the website, Salford Star editor Stephen Kingston thanked the local community for their ‘incredible support’.
“…we are now, at last, able to reappear in print. We’d like to thank everyone who has donated towards achieving this goal (we’d love to name some of them but their modesty is blazing). The aim has always been to come out in print again – to reach those people in the community for whom the digital divide is as wide as the wealth divide.
“The more advertising and financial support we get, the more issues we will produce and the more copies we will print. We would urge anyone who wants to help out with writing, photography, ad sales, fundraising or anything else to get in touch, to help make this re-launch a major success.”
The Salford Star will appear at the beginning of September as a tabloid magazine, with an initial print run of 20,000 copies, delivered free to homes, businesses, shops, community centres and on the streets across the city.
