Salford Star celebrates its publication of 2,000 online articles today by announcing a fundraiser to get it back into print.
Writing on the site today the team calls on its readers to help:
“The Salford Star is getting squeezed locally and nationally and keeping the publication going has been bloody hard but well worth it, thanks to constant support from the community. Only last week, a desperately needed new computer was donated to the Star. And, not a month goes by without a small donation appearing from somewhere.
“We’re at the point now where the print magazine can almost be published again.”
To raise the extra cash needed, the website announces a ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four themed event’ on Thursday 21 November at Cheetham Hill’s Asian restaurant, Saffron’s with a £10 entrance fee to include a free meal.
The magazine, and since then the website, has had a long battle to regain the community funding which was withdrawn.
Back in 2010 I reported how The Star applied to East Salford Community Committee, the area where it distributes 8,000 copies, for £2,500 which was turned down.
At that time according to an internal report from the meeting, as reported by the Star and seen by Journalism.co.uk, the application was rejected on grounds that it is overly political in nature and is “perceived by many to be a satirical publication which tends to criticise authority in partic [sic] singling out Salford council and individual councillors”.
