Detectives investigating inappropriate payments by journalists to police and public officials have arrested a former healthcare worker in Knowsley, Merseyside.

The 59-year-old is being interviewed at a local police station, while his home is searched.

The Met Police stated that it came as a result of information provided to police by News Corporation’s Management and Standards Committee.

“It relates to suspected payments to a public official and is not about seeking journalists to reveal confidential sources in relation to information that has been obtained legitimately.”

Operation Elveden is being supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and runs in conjunction with Operation Weeting, the ongoing phone-hacking inquiry.
