A Week in My Life: Janine Friston, Founder, Female Business Network

Janine Friston

Janine Friston launched the Female Business Network (FBN), based in South Manchester, in 2021.

The FBN provides online and in-person networking events to help women in business from across the UK to meet others, grow their audience, create goals and achieve their business plans.

She launched her first business, Promoting Trafford, in 2018 and is a mentor to start-ups and entrepreneurs.

Janine shared a recent week in her life before launching the first Female Business Festival in Trafford.

Monday

Mondays are generally a work from home and admin day. At 8.30am, I take a cup of coffee to my home office and start checking my emails, actioning anything that needs doing urgently. I have two client mentor calls later in the morning, helping them to create their start-up business plans and set goals. I work with a wide variety of clients and different types of businesses, so I must think on my feet and understand their needs and dreams.

My experience of being a business owner is essential grounding when it comes to helping others navigate their own journey into self-employment. I have some more emails to catch up on, business plans to read and feed back on, and research to get prepared for my meetings on Tuesday. I finish this at lunchtime and take my dog Arlo for a nice walk around 1pm. While it’s still OK weather-wise, I take advantage of getting some fresh air and downtime.

After lunch, I plan the rest of my week, identifying my priorities, as well as the longer-term projects that need to be worked on. I try and spend around 30 minutes a day on Instagram and then check Twitter, LinkedIn and my Facebook groups, responding to comments and messages. I have a face-to-face meeting in the afternoon, building relationships with a new contact and discussing a potential collaboration. 2023 is already shaping up to be exciting!

Tuesday

I travel into Manchester by tram to meet with start-up clients. I have three mentoring sessions scheduled today, plus a few calls, emails and prep in-between. After working home alone yesterday, the in-person interaction and involvement of others feels great! I finish the meetings mid-afternoon and then head home to pick Arlo up from doggie daycare. I always get an excited welcome from him!

Admin, emails and writing up the notes and actions from the morning’s one-to-ones come next. I also have a client almost ready to officially start their business, so some last-minute checks to their business plan, cash flow forecast and marketing ideas take place. Next, I’ll help them to register with HMRC and get them business-ready. Exciting times ahead for this client… I love this part of my mentoring!

My day doesn’t finish with dinner as, in the evening, I spend a couple of hours working on the Female Business Festival and Awards I’m part of in October. Tonight, I’m script writing and working on the intro for the daytime attendee workbooks. The festival is bringing together 80 female entrepreneurs to learn new skills, network and help grow their businesses. It’s going to be amazing, and the biggest event I’ve created to date. Luckily, I’m working with my ‘business besties’, Suzi Brown from The Smart Bear Digital and Hazel Woodward from Lift Social, as a collaboration project. I finally ‘clock off’ at 9pm and then it’s time for a bit of TV to unwind.

Wednesday

Mid-week and another day working from home. Arlo is pleased, as he can chill after doggie daycare yesterday. I’m ready for 8.30am and check my to-do list for today, as well as emails and messages. Over a coffee and breakfast, I then do some commenting and online engagement across my social media accounts. First up, I start to work on my content and posting strategy for Instagram for the next month. I work with Lift Social on this, which saves me lots of time. I’m confident in their abilities to help me grow my audience on this platform and I love that Hazel is from Urmston, so close for meetings etc.!

From accountancy to graphic design, working with local experts is something I’ve always done since I started my first business back in 2018. That’s how I met Suzi after I approached her for web development support. Most recently, I took on a VA to help with some of the festival’s admin duties. Before lunch I go for a short walk with Arlo and then start work on writing a business planning workshop that I’m delivering in the Female Business Network Facebook group in November. It is about creating a strategy and plan for 2023, and will help my members get organised and focused.

Work continues this evening with my FBN online networking meeting. I host one at night and one in the morning each month to help as many people as possible attend. I finish at 8.45pm and can then relax.

Thursday

The morning is full with business mentoring calls. I set myself up for a busy time by having a good breakfast, some coffee (obviously!) and I’m ready to go. After walking Arlo and lunch, I continue with my tasks for the festival and awards. These include writing marketing and email updates to attendees, finalists and partners, as well as continuing work on the script for the day and evening for the compère.

Goodie bag giveaways have also started to arrive, so these need to be collated and checked. I then check in with Hazel and Suzi again for an update on ticket sales, the workbooks and order of the day. Hazel has us all organised by using Clickup, so we can see where each individual task is up to, but regular calls and messages have helped keep us on track and accountable.

Mid-afternoon, I start to plan the November planning workshop workbook brief so I can pass the details over to my graphic designer to create. I’ve used the same designer, Vicky from VCM Graphic Design, since 2018. I know that she understands my tone of voice, target audience and how I like things to be, which makes things easier on both sides.

My teenage boys, Harrison and Max, arrive home after school, so it’s an early finish for me today. I started my first business five years ago so that I could drop them off and pick them up from school. Even though they’re teenagers now, I still like to be there if I’m needed.

Friday

I have a later start today and only get to my desk at 9.30am. Before that, my first job is to walk Arlo. I then check my to-do list and make sure I’m on track with all the goals I set at the start of the week. I have a call with an FBN member, then a business growth client before I have a lunchtime Zoom catch-up with my accountability group.

We meet every two weeks so we can discuss our goals and plans, share what’s going well and if we have any delays or concerns. This helps to keep us all focused, and allows us to make use of the group’s expertise to generate ideas and support each other.

After this, I have a final catch-up for the festival and awards before checking my inbox and social media so I can log off for an early finish. I enjoy a relaxing longer walk with Arlo before taking an hour to myself prior to my partner getting home from work… These are the benefits of working for yourself, and from home! I will be working this weekend though, but this is on my terms and when I want to.
