A new mobile app to help residents and visitors to Leeds discover what’s happening and where to go is being launched this month.

Called Radius, the app has been created by Leeds Welcome, a project which brings together different groups in the city such as the city council and independent traders.

It is designed by local businessman David Laycock of Leeds Ventures, designed by David Simmonds and is supported by O2 and First Direct Arena.

He said: “It makes sense as the largest employment base in digital and creative industries outside London for Leeds to launch a new app that really celebrates the points of difference in the city.

“Leeds is a vibrant place to live, work, visit and do business and our vision is about providing a framework and relevant platforms that support and promote creative, cultural and independent businesses and organisations by enhancing the visitor experience by connecting people, places and events in the city in new and innovative ways.”

Although the exact cost of the initiative hasn’t been released, Leeds Ventures says it has committed a significant amount of investment to the projects in development and raised funding in a variety of ways including both public and private income streams alongside commercial income generated through subscriptions, advertising and partnership opportunities.

The new app provides what the creators describe as ‘a digital welcome’ for visitors and is accompanied by new websites, Independent Leeds and Leeds Welcome, the Little Black Book and a volunteer ambassador scheme to enhance visitor experience

The training programme is designed for anyone over 16, who has a passion for Leeds and wants to play an important part in promoting their city. After undertaking introductory customer service training, the trainees have the opportunity to take part in welcoming visitors to the city for special events.
