Manchester agency Social Chain has opened an office in Berlin as it expands into the European market.

Matthias Schmid will oversee operations in the German city as managing director.

Schmid attended Manchester Business School and is former chief operating officer of German video marketing agency Videobeat Networks.

Social Chain recently received a $2 million investment from Georg Kofler, former CEO of German TV broadcasters ProSieben and Premiere.

Social Chain was established in November 2014 and has been profitable since its inception.

It won large digital agency of the year at the 2016 Prolific North awards.

The company focusses on engaging Millennials and the average age of its employees is 22.

It also has an office in London and is looking at expanding into the US market in future.

Chief executive Steven Bartlett said: “Berlin will be the first step of Social Chain’s international expansion.

“Breaking into Germany will give us an insight into how the use of social media platforms differs across cultures.”

Schmid added: “After meeting with the Social Chain team in Manchester, I’m feeling very excited about bringing their unique marketing approach to Mainland Europe.

“As a market, Germany presents a great opportunity for Social Chain.

“I believe we can bring something new to the way brands interact with consumers that has not been seen here before.”
