Co-operative Food becomes largest UK retailer to use Apple Pay

Manchester-based The Co-operative Food says it is the largest retailer in the UK to offer Apple Pay across all its stores.

Introduced today, the payment method will be available across all of its 11,800 tills.

“As a convenience retailer, it’s important for us to be pioneers of quicker and easier payment methods so that our savvy shoppers have the best possible experience,” explained Amanda Jennings, marketing communications director at The Co-operative Food.

“We’ve already seen how contactless payments have become second nature to our customers, and the ease of Apple Pay is perfectly aligned with how we want our customer’s to shop – the £20 limit also suits our average shopper’s basket spend, so we welcome the new payment method.”

It means that shoppers with the latest iPhone model or Apple Watch can pay securely with their device.

Earlier today, Deloitte revealed research suggesting that the mobile payment “revolution” would take off faster in the UK than the US.

Chester’s MBNA is in the first wave of UK banks to use the system.

“At MBNA, our passion is to make our customers’ lives easier. That’s why our team has pulled out all of the stops to ensure all our customers can access Apple Pay right from day one. Not all card providers can say the same,” said CEO Ian O’Doherty.
