Tom Tyrell, who’s voice was synonymous with Manchester United for decades, has died.
He was the sports editor and United commentator from the very start of Piccadilly Radio, having previously worked at BBC Radio Manchester.
United fans hold him particularly close to their hearts as he also did the Old Trafford tannoy announcements. Recently United We Stand fanzine published a story about when he was sent to Stamford Bridge to cover a game, but security wouldn’t let him in. So instead he had to commentate the whole match for Piccadilly Radio by peering over a fence.
Today colleagues and friends have been paying tribute to him:
“It was a great pleasure & an education to work alongside Tom Tyrrell at Piccadilly Radio. Very sad to hear he has passed away. Thoughts with his family. He was admired by many,” said BBC’s Dan Walker, who was previously sports presenter at Key 103.
Sky’s Fraser Dainton said:
“Very sad to hear a Manchester broadcasting legend has died. RIP Tom Tyrell. A mentor to me and others at Picc radio, and a lovely man.”
Justin Moorhouse added:
“Any Red, or indeed Blue from Manchester of a certain age will be sad to hear the passing of Tom Tyrell, you can hear his voice now, can’t you?”
Sky’s Vinny O’Connor said:
“So sad about Tom Tyrell. For so long an ever present covering Utd and very good to me when I started in Manchester @ Century. Thanks Tom.”
