He’s joined by actress Zoe Tapper (Mr Selfridge, Lewis), with the drama written by Ed Whitmore (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, He Kills Coppers) and Tracey Malone (Rillington Place), and directed by Marc Evans (Hinterland, Collision).

Eleventh Hour Films Head of Development Paula Cuddy (Strike Back, Wallander) will executive produce alongside company founder and Managing Director Jill Green (New Blood, Collision) and Andrew Benson (Strike Back, Prime Suspect) will produce the new series.

ITV’s controller of drama Victoria Fea and head of drama series Jane Hudson have commissioned this second series.

“We’re delighted to be working on a brand new series of Safe House with Eleventh Hour Films,” said Victoria. “The format lends itself beautifully to creating a suspenseful drama with a new set of characters in a new safe house. As always Ed and Tracey’s scripts are gripping and compelling with twists and turns that shock and take you by surprise.”

Jill Green at Eleventh Hour Films: “It’s brilliant to have enticed Stephen back to the UK for a completely new Safe House and thrilling story, proving the power of the brand.”

The first series starred Christopher Eccleston and was filmed in the Lake District. It aired last year and averaged 6.5m viewers, winning a 24% share of its slot.
