Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer’s surreal sitcom House of Fools will not be returning for a third series.

Set in Bob’s home and filmed in front of a live audience at MediaCityUK, the madcap BBC Two show featured a series of uninvited lodgers, visitors and guests like Beef (Matt Berry), Bosh (Dan Skinner) and Julie (Morgana Robinson).

Despite favourable audience and critical reaction, House of Fools had been tipped to be axed after just one series after seeing ratings slip from 1.27 million to 700,000 over the course of the series.

However, helped by an online campaign supported by celebrities including Stephen Fry, the series was given a second chance by controller of comedy commissioning Shane Allen, who announced the decision at the Salford Comedy Festival.

But despite the second series averaging around a million viewers per episode, the BBC has confirmed that it will not be recommissioned.

“BBC2 and BBC Comedy would like to thank Vic, Bob, Lisa Clark and everyone else involved in making House of Fools, but after two fantastically inventive series the show won’t be returning,” a BBC spokesperson said.
