Swallows and Amazons film starts shooting this weekend

Filming gets underway this weekend for the big screen adaptation of Swallows and Amazons.

It will be shot in the Lake District and Yorkshire, with support from Screen Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Content Fund, The Electric Shadow Company and Maiden Investments.

The Arthur Ransome classic has been adapted from a screenplay by Andrea Gibb (Dear Frankie) and will star Philippa Lowthorpe (The Other Boleyn Girl, Call the Midwife, Jamaica Inn), Rafe Spall (BFG, I Give it a year), Kelly Macdonald (No Country for Old Men), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Jessica Hynes (Shaun of the Dead) and Harry Enfield.

Set in the Lakes, the story follows 4 children dreaming of an adventure and finally getting permission to camp on their own on an island in the middle of a lake. When they land, though, they realised they may not be alone.

“Watching the young actors learn to sail so brilliantly in our Swallow and Amazon, as we prepare for the shoot, has been a great thrill. I can’t wait to bring this world of pure adventure to life,” said Lowthorpe.

The project was developed by BBC Films and the BFI, with Harbour Pictures. HanWay Films will handle worldwide sales, with UK distribution through StudioCanal.
