Full details and new presenter line-ups for Radio 5 live’s “biggest schedule shake-up in years”

Radio 5 live today announced the biggest shake-up to its daytime schedule in years.

The changes will see many familiar and long-serving presenters – including Victoria Derbyshire, Richard Bacon and Shelagh Fogarty – leave the MediaCityUK-based station.

The new line-up – to take effect from October – will be led by Adrian Chiles and Peter Allen, who will host 5 live Daily. The role will not affect Chiles’ commitment to host ITV’s football coverage. The new programme will broadcast from 10am to 1pm, Monday to Friday, with Chiles presenting on Mondays and Tuesdays and Allen – who was the station’s launch breakfast presenter in 1994 – presenting from Wednesday to Friday.

The station said that 5 live Daily will be its “home of hard-hitting, distinctive journalism”.

From 1pm to 4pm, Football Focus host Dan Walker will join BBC Northern Ireland’s Sarah Brett in hosting the second of the two new programmes, Afternoon Edition. It will feature a “new range of expert voices, more stories from all over the UK and interviews with big name guests”.

Former Key 103 and North West Tonight presenter Walker has become a well-known face of BBC Sport and is currently appearing regularly on the BBC’s coverage of the World Cup. Brett is a co-presenter on BBC Radio Foyle’s flagship breakfast show.

On Friday afternoons from 1pm-2pm, Eleanor Oldroyd will host The Friday Sports Panel, followed by Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review at 2pm.

At 4pm, current presenter Anna Foster will now be joined by Tony Livesey for 5 live Drive, every Monday to Friday until 7pm. Livesey’s current slot on the weekend breakfast show will be taken by Chris Warburton.

Nicky Campbell and Rachel Burden will continue to host the breakfast show each morning.

Other changes announced today include the addition of Georgie Thompson and Josh Widdicombe as presenters of Saturday’s popular Fighting Talk show, replacing current host Christian O’Connell.

606 phone-in host Jason Roberts will also join the 5 live Sport team and will host football on 5 live sports extra.

Dan Walker’s place as the presenter of the Friday night 5 live Sport show will be taken by Mark Chapman, with Jonathan Overend taking over the reins of 5 live Sport on Sunday afternoons.

BBC Radio’s chief football correspondent, Mike Ingham, who retires from commentary at the end of the World Cup, will be presenting 5 live football specials throughout the 2014/15 season, and John Murray will become the new football correspondent.

These changes follow-on from previous additions to the 5 live schedule, which have included the introduction of Question Time Extra Time, Match of the Day 2 Extra, 5 live Science, an extended Wake Up To Money and the move of Pienaar’s Politics and 5 live Investigates to a new Sunday morning slot.

BBC Radio 5 live controller Jonathan Wall said: “This autumn feels the right time to refresh parts of our schedule as we follow-on from what’s already proving to be a wonderful sporting summer.

“We have a great blend of established presenters and new signings to take 5 live forward in our home in Salford. It’s an exciting and creative team that I know will drive the station on to even greater heights.

“Victoria, Shelagh and Richard have all played such key roles delivering fantastic live radio and I wish them every success with their future projects.”
