A senior editor for Johnston Press in Yorkshire has left to take up a teaching role at the University of Sheffield.

Mark Bradley was editor of the Wakefield Express and group editor of the Yorkshire Weekly Newspaper Group, which includes the Batley & Birstall News, Spenborough Guardian and Morley Observer.

He had previously been a sub-editor for the Harrogate Advertiser and the Yorkshire Evening Post, and also editor of the Halifax Courier when it was a daily title.

He left the role last month and is now a journalism teacher at the University of Sheffield, which described him as being “instrumental in converting newsrooms into multimedia operations, as well as the strategic development of editorial policy across print, online and social media channels”.

He will be succeeded on an interim basis at the Wakefield Express by Hannah Thaxted, who is editor of the Morley Observer and the Reporter series.

She said: “Wakefield’s a terrific city with a really positive buzz about it. I have deputised for Mark editing the Express and the Pontefract and Caslteford and Hemsworth papers over the past few years, so I know the titles and the staff really well already.”

Editorial director Jeremy Clifford said a more long-term appointment would be made “in due course”.
