The Gate Films has set up a new dedicated animation off-shoot, Pen Animation.
The development was first mooted earlier this month, with the arrival of director and graphics and animation specialist, Matt McDermott.
It will be headed up by producer, Victoria Watson and sees the Manchester production company establish itself further in Scotland, with Edinburgh chosen to be its base.
“We’ve had an in-house team of animators in Edinburgh for several years, working with clients from Creative Scotland to Jura Whisky, but have noticed a gap in the market recently for the kind of director roster we’ve now assembled,” explained Simon Lewis, CEO at The Gate Films.
“Animation advertising has come on leaps and bounds in recent years and we’ve seen a surge in popularity and demand for it.
“It made perfect sense to invest in a specialist branch of the company here in Scotland and Pen will play a key part in our expansion plans as we look to continue our growth over the next year.”
Pen’s staff of 4 will focus on animated commercials, music videos and online content.
“I’ve always been passionate about animation and I am extremely excited to lead this new venture. I’ve spent the past few months carefully hand-picking a selection of internationally acclaimed animators and directors to provide us with an incredibly strong and diverse roster that will offer something very different to the rest of the current market,” added Watson.
