BAFTA-winners’ Manchester agency puts Chester Zoo on loop

Creative agency Meanwhile has developed the ‘Endless Adventures’ platform it introduced last year for Chester Zoo, by making a new film which takes us on a continuous journey around the hugely popular family attraction.

The film, which is designed to be viewed on loop as well as appearing as a 30 second edit on TV and VOD, gives viewers a mesmerising snapshot of what every action-packed day out promises.

Using Gaussian Splat technology which cleverly scans environments in 3D, directing duo Baby, through production company MindsEye, helped create this ambitious illustration of the sheer breadth of things there are to do at Chester Zoo.

Baby commented: “We wanted to explore the Zoo in a whole new way, and capture the experiences in a winding one shot that seamlessly travels through different enclosures. Gaussian Splats are an incredible way to produce near perfect digital twins of a location. We captured footage of each location, and fed it through some nifty software that essentially paints a 3D world based on the footage provided, giving us an amazing sandbox to play in.”

Senior brand and marketing manager Anna Babilinski-Barker, from Chester Zoo, explained: “This summer’s creative direction marks an exciting step for us. It’s bold, distinctive and unlike anything we’ve done before! In an increasingly crowded market, powerful, standout creative is essential to cut through and show the extraordinary experiences that Chester Zoo offers. But the Zoo is SO much more than an incredible day out – as a national conservation zoo, every visit directly supports our vital work around the world to help nature survive and thrive.”

Senior creative at Meanwhile Jenny Tighe, added, “It’s been an absolute blast working with the team at Chester Zoo and MindsEye to bring this one to life, it’s been an exciting one to watch unfold as we explored and learned a lot about this new and incredible technology, and the brilliant result we’ve achieved together.”

Sound design was done through Factory, which incorporated a unique score crafted by Gas Music, whilst the edit was by Graded Films and the colour by Fawn.

Meanwhile was founded in 2022 by BAFTA-winning former BBC Creative directors James Cross and Tim Jones, along with former Chapter managing director, Al Marchant. The agency’s clients include tombola, Chester Zoo, Travel Supermarket, Comic Relief, Coventry Building Society, parkrun, East Midlands Railway, Netflix and Barnardo’s.
