“Working with Netflix” event at MediaCityUK

Netflix is seeking to grow its original content in the UK and Europe, according to reports from Sheffield Doc/Fest.

The streaming giant held a “private cocktail party” in the city earlier this week, with executives said to have outlined their European strategy.

This includes acquisitions and investment in original content. Commissioners are said to be interested in “bold, attention-grabbing ideas” that delve into public figures and global headlines.

The European growth will be led from its new London office, which is set to start commissioning regional programming from September. There are also strong rumours circulating MediaCityUK, that Netflix could be eyeing the location as a second UK base, potentially to handle post production.

One North West production company already enjoying success with Netflix is Lime Pictures. The second season of its drama, Free Rein, is airing next month and Lime’s joint managing directors, Kate Little and Claire Poyser, will be joined by executive producer Rebecca Hodgson in a Q&A at the Lowry Theatre about working with Netflix.
