Manchester sports tech start-up launches crowdfunding campaign

Will Hawkins - Circl

Manchester-based sports tech start-up Circl has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support the creation of new game experiences.

Backed by Dutch Sport Tech Fund, following an investment of £375,000 last year, the start-up is now raising money on Crowdcube to build more in-play game experiences across a variety of sports.

With an end goal of raising £400,000, Circl has already raised £368,944 through the campaign. It forms part of plans to raise up to £2m over the next 12 months to scale the business.

The funds will enable the tech firm to create and launch two new football game experiences and further support ambitions to launch in the US.

The new live-action sports platform created by Circl aims to bridge the gap between sports media, gaming and casual betting with a mission to provide a new way for sports fans to engage with live sport.

Will Hawkins, CEO of Circl, said: “The convergence between sports media, sports betting and consumer brands is the future of digital entertainment, giving birth to a totally new casual betting landscape. At the core of our concept, is a super fun game that everyone can understand, enjoy and potentially gain from. Whether that be in cash or prizes!

“We are confident that Circl’s low barrier to entry will act as an effective top of funnel proposition. Our initial traction shows that we will acquire customers at a significantly lower average CAC spend, compared to that seen in the sports betting market. As we grow, we believe we will be able to connect with brands and offer customers more ways to win with Circl. Creating a win-win fan engagement ecosystem for everyone involved.”

The team at Circl includes founder and CEO Will Hawkins, CTO Mark Quinn, Non Executive Directors Eddie Ross and Matt Steer. The firm has also taken on two new members of staff in social media and customer service roles.
