Stress survey launched in regional newsrooms

NUJStaff at a regional newspaper group are being asked to take part in a survey about stress levels.

The journalists at Johnston Press, which publishes many titles across the north including The Yorkshire Post, Hartlepool Mail and Lancashire Evening Post, are being asked about the pressure they are under in the confidential survey launched by the The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) today.

The union is concerned that rising and changing workloads, alongside lower numbers of staff are leading to more stress at work for editorial teams.

NUJ national organiser, Laura Davison explained that the survey followed various restructuring and redundancy rounds at the company.

“We have had examples of members in tears over the changes and pressures they are facing on the front line. Now we’re asking people who work for Johnston Press to complete this simple anonymous survey and share their own experiences with the NUJ so we can help.”

The group chapel said it was particularly concerned about onerous freelance agreements and is seeking to agree positive reforms with the company.
