Manchester United has signed up to social networking site, Line as it seeks to engage with fans in Asia.

The messaging platform has more than 490m users around the world and United will be running an English language service as well as local versions available for Japan and Thailand.

“I am delighted that the club has launched a presence on Line. With a potential audience of nearly five hundred million users, it’s the latest innovative and fun way for our fans in Asia and beyond to engage and deepen their ties with the club they love,” said United’s group managing director, Richard Arnold.

Launched in 2011, Line offers free calls and texts, but also Facebook-a-like timelines, games, apps and photo filters.

Manchester United recently exceeded 55m fans on Facebook and 3m followers on Twitter, the latter, in the space of a year.
