A Silicon Valley tech firm behind a robot that scans shelves for retailers like Walmart has announced the opening of its first international office in Sheffield.

San Francisco start-up Bossa Nova, which spun out from Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute, is on an expansion drive after securing a total of $70million in funding.

Its robots, which work three times faster and can be twice as accurate as humans, roam supermarket aisles and work out what’s in stock, what needs to be replenished and which items are not selling well.

US supermarket giant Walmart already uses them in dozens of its stores across America.

Bossa Nova expects the new office to grow rapidly – it is launching with eight staff but is predicting 100-plus within three years – and says it chose Sheffield for its universities’ excellence in robotics and access to world-class talent. Additionally, the company will advance its partnerships with the UK robotics industry.

It will also enable the company to meet UK demand for its autonomous robot and real-time data services.

Red McKay, Bossa Nova’s MD Europe and former operations director at Hornby toy company, will lead the new office.

“The UK is a natural extension for our retail service solutions, and we expect rapid expansion under the leadership of Red McKay,” said Martin Hitch, co-founder and chief business officer of Bossa Nova.

“Red’s experience of working for retailers and their suppliers will ensure a successful launch of our services in the UK.”

“Sheffield has access to first-class talent and a global reputation for excellence in robotics, so it is no surprise Bossa Nova has chosen to open its first international HQ in the city,” said the Minister for Investment, Graham Stuart MP.

“Bossa Nova’s office move is another endorsement of Britain’s world-class investment environment, particularly outside of London, for the world’s leading tech companies.”
