A new two-part BBC One documentary will go behind the scenes of a Liverpool hotel.

A Very Northern Hotel (w/t) will reveal the secret life of The Shankly Hotel in Liverpool city centre.

It’s been commissioned from Spun Gold TV, the company behind BBC One doc A Very Modern Grand Hotel, which last year followed the staff of London’s Corinthia Hotel.

A Very Northern Hotel will follow the staff and new general manager as they put on a variety of events including weddings, hen dos, wedding anniversaries and baby showers.

The documentary will come more than two decades after The Hotel, which followed The Adelphi over eight episodes in 2017 and was a ratings hit.

Daniela Neumann, MD of Spun Gold, said: “A Very Northern Hotel is a warm, funny documentary that provides a unique snapshot of modern Britain, revealing guests’ hopes, fears and aspirations as they mark watershed moments.”

Clare Sillery, the BBC’s Head of Commissioning, Documentaries, added: “We hope this film set in the Shankly Hotel will tell us something about aspiration in Britain today, by looking at how families from every walk of life choose to celebrate and mark the biggest events of their lives.”

The documentary is produced and directed by Kate Siney, executive produced by Spun Gold Head of Factual Bridget Boseley and commissioned by Emily Smith. It is being distributed internationally by all3media International.

Recent Spun Gold shows have included Sir Cliff Richard: 60 Years in Private and in Public (ITV), Meghan Markle: An American Princess (FOX USA) and The Real Full Monty (ITV).
