New podcast to showcase best of BBC Local Radio storytelling

Becca Bryers

BBC English Regions is launching a new podcast showcasing the best of BBC Local Radio storytelling.

Multi Story will offer a collection of personal stories from across England, following a different theme each week, and will be presented by BBC Local Radio producer Becca Bryers. Each podcast will feature three or four stories.

Some will be original recordings by Bryers, but most will be handpicked from audio that has previously aired on one of the 39 BBC Local Radio stations, re-packaged for a podcast audience.

Bryers said: “Most of my working life has been spent in BBC Local Radio and so I’ve loved this opportunity to share some of the brilliant personal stories broadcast across the network every day, with a new podcast audience.

“It’s been a real joy listening to a wealth of great audio giving insight into the lives of people from across the country – which means it’s also been super tricky selecting just a small taster menu for Multi Story! I hope listeners will be just as entertained and amazed as I have been.”

The podcast has been commissioned by Stuart Thomas, Head of English Regions Programmes.

He said: “Every day on every BBC Local Radio station in England you can hear fascinating, compelling human stories.

“With Multi Story we’re giving the best of those stories a new home – while reflecting them to a much wider audience. From parenting to love letters, these stories reveal slices of English life that only BBC Local Radio can shine a light on.”

The first podcast will be released on October 10th and is themed around the subject of childhood homes. It features an extract from a documentary called Wink’s Big Day Out which was broadcast on BBC Radio Lincolnshire four years ago.

Radio Lincolnshire presenter William Wright travelled to London with a Lincolnshire farmer, Farmer Wink, who was using a train for the first time and Bryers caught up with him.

Other themes to be explored in later podcasts include parenting, love letters and strangers.

Multi Story will also feature an excerpt from the emotional documentary The Emptiness Within which was presented by the former BBC Radio York breakfast presenter Kay Crewdson and explores the thoughts and experiences of those who go through a miscarriage.
