Benidorm creator Derren Litten is moving from ITV to BBC One for his new comedy Scarborough, starring Jason Manford, Katherine Kelly and Stephanie Cole.

The six-parter was announced today at the Edinburgh TV Festival and described as a sitcom with a “Northern comedy heart”.

It will follow the lives and loves of a small handful of residents in Scarborough who meet in the local karaoke bar to swap gossip and sing ’80s classics.

“It’s a real coup to have someone of Derren’s great experience land a broad sitcom with a Northern comedy heart to it, it’ll do Scarborough very proud,” said Shane Allen, Controller of BBC Comedy.

Filming is set to take place on location in summer 2019 with the release date still to be confirmed. The BBC has also announced that Murder in Successville’s Tom Davis and James de Frond will team up again for new sitcom pilot ‘king Gary.

“These two new shows highlight BBC One’s continued commitment to breaking new comedy on the channel. Both are real gems; Scarborough, from sitcom writing heavyweight Derren Litten and ‘king Gary’s writer performer Tom Davis pens a mainstream sitcom with tons of heart,” said Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content.
