BBC Radio Sheffield to cross Europe in Bangers and Cash rally

Radio Sheffield

BBC Radio Sheffield listeners will be able to follow breakfast presenter Toby Foster as he drives 1291 miles through Europe in the “Bangers and Cash rally” in September.

Foster and breakfast show colleagues Dan Green and Amy Nagy are setting off from Sheffield on Friday September 21st following their show that morning.

They will take it in turns to drive through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland and Italy before finishing in Monaco on Monday September 24th. There will be regular updates and the show will come live from Milan on Monday September 24th.

Their car will be a white Mercedes S80 nicknamed El Presidente. The artwork on the bonnet was designed by Katie Woods, who won a Radio Sheffield competition earlier this year, and was painted by local artist Laura Gra.

The rally is the UK’s first ‘art on tour’ banger rally and 21 cars, driven by teams from the Sheffield area, will take part.

Foster said: “I think it will be a miracle if we actually get to Monte Carlo in El Presidente. But at least we’re going to look good as our bonnet design is absolutely fantastic. I can’t wait for the rally to start – me, Dan and Amy are going to have a blast and we’ll enjoy sharing our adventure with our listeners.”

Katrina Bunker, Editor of BBC Radio Sheffield, added: “Bangers and Cash is such a great project that is really going to get the city talking and it’s brilliant for BBC Radio Sheffield to be involved.

“Katie’s design does a great job of capturing how the radio station brings communities together in a fun and vibrant way – and Laura’s done so well to translate that to a car bonnet, it can’t have been easy. Toby and his team are going to have such an adventure on the rally in September and it’ll be great to share all the fun along the way with our audiences.”

The Bangers and Cash rally is organised by the charity Roundabout, a Children in Need funded charity, that raises money to help end youth homelessness.  All the car bonnets will be going on display in an exhibition in Sheffield’s Winter Garden throughout August and can be visited by members of the public.

After the rally the bonnets will return to Sheffield where they will be auctioned.
