Bauer radio takeovers to undergo “in-depth investigation”

hits

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has referred Bauer’s takeover of a series of local radio groups for an in-depth investigation.

The CMA completed an initial investigation this week, which, it said, raised “competition concerns.”

It now moves onto a second phase, which is due to be completed by 21st January 2020.

The investigation covers the acquisition of certain parts of Celador Entertainment, Lincs FM and Wireless Group, as well as the entire business of UKRD.

Initially concerns were raised about Bauer buying key rivals to its current local stations in Yorkshire, the West of England and the Midlands.

The report also looked into how the move would affect the future of First Radio Sales, which handles advertising on behalf of more than 100 independent local stations. CMA felt the takeover could lead to “higher prices and a lower quality of service.”
