Record revenue as Manchester United broadcasting income increases by 40%

Manchester United has revealed record revenues of £581.2m for the previous year, driven by a 40% increase in broadcast income.

The club made an operating profit of £80.8m and during the period signed 12 sponsorship deals, including partnerships for in-house channel, MUTV.

Broken down, its commercial revenue was up 2.7% year on year (£275.5m) and broadcast revenue rose from £140.4m to £194.1m (38.2%).

The reason for such a major increase in broadcast income, was primarily due to the new Premier League broadcasting rights, plus additional coverage during the Europe League.

“We concluded a successful 2016/17 season with a total of three trophies and a return to Champions League football. The year saw us set record revenues of over £581m and achieve a record EBITDA of £199.8m. We are pleased with the investment in our squad and look forward to an exciting season,” said Ed Woodward, executive vice chairman.

While commercial income did increase, mobile and content income actual fell by 15.6% to £9.2m over the year. Sponsorship had a small rise of 1.4% to £162.3m.

The outlook for 2018 is for revenue to break even more records, heading towards £585m.
